Making headlines in pop this week…
Glee is back tonight! I’ve been busy running back and forth all morning, making sure my gleeks are all equipped with emergency pads just in case they wet themselves during the day at the very mention of the show. Show producers have fanned the flames by releasing five new Glee tracks ahead of tonight’s premiere episode. There’s still hours to go before it airs but these songs have already made Top 25 on the US iTunes store.
Listen to the new Glee tracks: ‘Empire State of Mind’, ‘Listen’ and ‘Telephone’. The brand new season will air here 7:30pm on Channel 10.
Rihanna‘s much gushed about ‘Who’s That Chick’ video/track was actually a promo for Doritos‘s Late Night music video event and is by no means, “connected to her LOUD album”.
The snack food company is hyping this as the “world’s first ever interactive music video” connecting several artists from around the globe. If the Armageddon-type poster’s anything to go by, we might just wake up next month to a new world leader.
Nadine Coyle is threatening air guitars and gospel choirs for her debut solo album. She also hooked up with Tony Kanal from No Doubt for her first writing session and she’s half-minding her pub in L.A. from her laptop. Seriously, this woman is raising the stakes in every game.
In an interview with Digital Spy, Nuhdeen waxes lyrical about “writing and producing” her album, the “liberating” break from Xenomania productions and super songwriter Guy Chambers finding her humble Garageband-hemmed tracks on the interwebs. The ‘Insatiable’ single is out 1 November in the UK with the album of the same name hitting Tesco shelves the following week.

Mariah Carey fans can put to rest her battered and well-loved 90s Christmas album this year because she’s filling our stockings with a new Xmas record. Our favourite denim shorts-clad manatee has been busy writing new Yule tide classics with Brian Michael-Cox and she’s also re-recorded the signature ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’.
Speaking of reupholstering old shit, how amazing is that photo shop work? What kind of mad scientist is responsible for this amalgamation of Mimi’s neck and head circa ‘Touch My Body’ with that same body on her Christmas album 16 years ago?
Merry Christmas II You – don’t fight the cringe, we all felt it too – is out here on 5 November.
Susan Boyle – also formally known as Simon Cowell‘s cash bovine for the holiday season – has also unveiled her Christmas album. The Gift will be a mix of Christmas classics and inspirational covers – with reported forays into jazz. Confirmed tracks include covers of ‘Hallelujah’ (Leonard Cohen), ‘Don’t Dream It’s Over’ (Crowded House) and ‘Perfect Day’ (Lou Reed), which will serve as the LP’s first single.
The Gift hits Aussie shelves on 12 November.
Joe McElderry flips his vocal cords into falsetto mode and cues the massive 80s power pop synths for his grand new single ‘Ambitions’. Totally didn’t see this twink switching up the game like that. I almost betted all $27 of my life savings that he’d lead with a sappy string-soaked ballad about finding himself. Much like my introduction to Hurts’ album, after several listens this song is growing to a throbbing addiction.
‘Ambitions’ is out 10 October and his long-awaited debut album Wide Awake is out in the UK 25 October.
Grant Smillie of TV Rock cuts a summer mix tape for the dance floors and the best part is that it’s here now. Unlike the warmth of spring. That’s right Memaw Nature, I’m lookin’ at chu like you owe me a favour. Neon Records’ Essential 10 is Grant’s euphoric blend of ten remixes featuring our gurl Zoe Badwi‘s ‘Freefallin’, Pendulum‘s ‘Witchcraft’ and Dirty South‘s ‘Phazing’.
Click to stream the mix here and let’s party like it’s 4:30pm on a Friday.

Short Stack will be rocking Melbourne’s Fed Square this Friday on Sunrise to promote their new single ‘Planets’. The local rockers insists on colouring your morning run for trams and lattes so if you’re not dashing off to work, make sure you holler when they hit the stage at 9am and stick around for the single signing after.
‘Planets’ is out this Friday and the new album This Is Bat Country hits stores on 19 November.
